In 2021, the demand for transport recovered after the Covid-19 crisis in Europe’s main economies, and the manufacturers were struggling to reach full capacity, so the demand for transport increased sharply, and also the tariff: by 3.2 points compared to the end of 2020, according to an Upply analysis. The last quarter of 2021 brought the sixth consecutive increase of this index, mainly driven by the increase in fuel prices, by about 25% compared to the beginning of the year, in some important EU markets, and by the driver shortage. On the other hand, in 2022, because of the war in Ukraine, all the predictions regarding the tariffs proved to be wrong, because the diesel price grew significantly and frequently, from one week to another. More than that, the predictions about the volume also proved to be wrong, because of an economic crisis (anticipated more or less, but aggravated by the war and the energy crises the war caused in Europe). The huge decrease in volumes would have also impacted the tariffs, but they did not to a big extent, because of the transport costs, that increased a lot compared to 2021. In this context, the total turnover of the Romanian transport firms and their total profit increased a lot compared to 2021 – from 12.90 to 15.70 billion euros, respectively from 1 to 1.3 billion euros. Both due to inflation and tariff increases, but also to a very good first semester – after that the volumes began to decline and the total figures deteriorated. The percentages of transport operators in the total turnover and profit of all the Romanian companies were constant: 2.95% in 2021 and 2.89% in 2022, respectively 2.43% in 2021 and 2.41% in 2022. We are talking about 41,535 transport companies (those with CAEN code 4941) in 2022, compared to 41,132 in 2021, representing, in both years, 1.75% of the total number of companies in Romania. They had 149,873 employees, compared to 150,429 in 2021, meaning 3.73% of the total number of employees in Romania in 2022 and 3.89% in 2021.
The revenues of the entire Romanian transport industry increased in 2022 by 21.7% compared to 2021 and the revenues of the first 500 companies ranked by turnover keep the proportion, being 21.1% higher, 6.19 billion euros, compared to 4.19 billion euros, as the same companies had in 2021, and compared to 5.06 billion euros, as the companies in Top 500 in 2021 had.
The top 100 companies by turnover had a total of 3.40 billion euros in 2022, compared to 2.90 billion euros, as the first 100 companies had in 2021 (so an increase of 21.9%, similar to the increase of the entire industry), and compared to 2.63 billion euros, which had the 100 leading companies in 2022.
The top 30 companies with the highest turnover in 2022 had a total of 1.65 billion euros, compared to 1.31 in 2021 and compared to 1.36, which had the first 30 companies in the 2021 ranking.
Four carriers in Romania cross the €100,000,000 threshold
Given the large increase in turnover for most carriers, there is no longer just one company with revenues of over 100 million euros, as in 2021, but four companies. Internațional Alexander is, for the second time, the leader of this ranking, with 128.88 million euros, compared to 101.44 in 2021. Dolo Trans Olimp increases from 82.40 to 117.85 million euros and climbs from third to the second place. Rin Trans Activ increases even more in turnover, from 67.81 to 109.71 million euros, and climbs from the fifth to the third place, and Vos Logistics Cargo, with a slightly smaller increase, from 95.70 to 103.53, drops two places, from the second place to the fourth.
Of these four companies, the largest assets, 79.67 million euros in total, belong to the leader, followed by the second place, with 58.61 million euros. Rin Trans Activ has assets of only 17.68 million euros (but a significant increase compared to 6.28 million euros in 2021), and Vos Logistics Cargo has assets of 25.85 million euros, compared to 15.70 in 2021. These two companies are surpassed by five companies among the top 30 in terms of turnover, but also by Luscan (with assets of 30.28 million euros), Romstyl Impex (34.99 million) or Est Europa Expediții (26.08 million), which are outside the Top 30 by turnover. That’s because Rin Trans Activ is not exactly a carrier – although it owns 130 trucks and 22 barges, as mentioned on the official website – which can be seen from the small number of employees – 104 – compared to Dolo Trans Olimp or Vos Logistics Cargo, which make almost the same turnover, but with 480 and 268 employees respectively. The company from Constanța is a grain trader, that’s why its turnover is high, but the profit is lower.
Internațional Alexander is also in first place in terms of number of employees, with 992, but down from 1,008 in 2021.
Six other firms have turnover of over 50 million euros. Among them Skiptrans, with 86.34 million euros, compared to 66.52 in 2021, and Duvenbeck, with 85.49 million euros, compared to 74.07 in 2021, down from fourth to fifth place. Next comes J.T. Grup Oil, which in 2021 was in 17th place, so it climbed a lot due to the increase of 26.20 million euros, and Carrion Expedition, which had a decrease of 8.12 million euros and maintains its seventh position.
Routier European Transport and Filip recorded the most spectacular increases – Routier from 18th place in 2021 (thanks to a 19.60 million euros increase in turnover) and Filip from 20th place in 2021, thanks to a revenue increase of 16.68 million euros. Routier had a turnover of about 54 million euros in 2022, compared to 35 in 2021, and in 2023 it was estimated to reach 78 million euros. The profit was 1.45 million euros in 2022 and 0.68 million euros in the first half of 2023.
These results were achieved thanks to the growth of the fleet, which now counts 152 own trucks and 900 own and subcontracted semi-trailers and swap bodies, but also due to the higher transport tariffs in 2022, a year that was favourable to transport operators, despite the sharp increase in diesel costs, energy, labour and vehicle purchase, and especially despite the volumes fluctuations.
The assets of these five companies range between 17.03 million euros (Carrion) and 37 million euros (Routier) – which has invested heavily in intermodal transport, but also in fleet and warehouses – and the number of employees, between 35 (J.T. Group Oil) and 855 (Skiptrans, on the second place after Internațional Alexander according to this indicator, although the figure is lower than in 2021, when it had 912 employees).
Each company ranked from 11th to 19th place has a turnover of over 40 million euros, and six of them are also in the Top 20 in 2021: H.Essers (which registers an increase of 5.52 million euros and keeps its 12th place), Total N S A (19th in 2021 and 16th in 2022, when it had an increase of 8.33 million euros), Dunca Expediții (11th in 2021 and 17th in 2022, when it had an increase of 3.57 million euros), Internațional Lazăr Company (which in 2021 was on 10th place and in 2022 on 18th, but grew only by €201,087), Gartner Eurotrans (13th in 2021 and 19th in 2022, with an increase of 2.27 million euros) and Arcese Transport (16th in 2021 and 20th in 2022, when it increased by 5,60 million euros).
The four firms with a turnover of more than 40 million euros in 2022 that do not appear in Top 20 in 2021 are Binar (on 11th place, with an increase in turnover of 16.89 million euros), Agexim (on 13th place, with an increase of 18.03 million euros), Lagermax Autotransport (14th, up 9.02 million euros) and Hoedlmayer-Lazăr România (15th, up 12.12 million euros).
Among the companies with over 40 million euros turnover, the largest assets still belong to Internațional Lazăr Company (61.46 million euros, on second place after Internațional Alexander from this perspective) and the smallest, to Gartner Eurotrans (5.44 million euros). Dunca Expediții has the most employees (461) and Hoedlmayr-Lazăr the fewest (168).
Another 29 companies had turnovers of over 30 million euros, and some of them were even in Top 20 in 2021. Vio Transgrup, ranked 14th in 2021, increased in 2022 by 1.33 million euros. Eliton Trans was on 15th place in 2021 and decreased by €17,209 (it is the second of the leading firms, after Carrion, which recorded a decrease, although very small), but instead A & C International Road Cargo, part of the same group as Eliton, increased by almost 8 million euros, from 17.4 to 25.4. An important decrease also had HTR Spedition, on the 9th place in 2021, but which in 2022 had a 14.69 million euros smaller turnover, most likely due to the transfer of part of the fleet to Western Europe, and which now ends the group of carriers with over 30 million euros in 2022, being 49th in the overall ranking.
Transpeco has the largest assets in this group (31.35 million euros) and Romstyl Impex has the biggest number of employees (402).
Among the companies in Top 30 by turnover, the highest increase in turnover was registered by those in Top 3, but not in the same order: Rin Trans Activ (41.89 million euros), Dolo Trans Olimp (35.44 million euros), Internațional Alexander (27.44 million euros). As for Dolo Trans Olimp, it should be noted that the company specialized in car transport has also invested in real estate in recent years and in 2022 completed the Nordmark Residence residential complex in Pitești. Thus, part of the 2022 increase in both turnover and profit was also due to this new business line. In fact, Dolo Trans Olimp is not the only carrier that has invested in real estate – the figures of other companies are also influenced by real estate sales. Among them, with the third highest growth, are the companies in Agexim group, with 29.59 million euros.
Next in the ranking of the largest increases in value is J.T Grup Oil, with 26.20 million euros, and nine other companies in Top 30 increased by more than 10 million euros.
The highest percentage increase in turnover among the Top 30 companies belongs to J.T. Grup Oil (75%), Agexim (70%), Iliuță Expedition (66%) and Rin Trans Activ (62%), and the smallest, to Dunca (9%), Vos Logistics Cargo (8%), Gartner Eurotrans (6%) and Vio Transgrup (4%).
But even below the Top 30 there are companies that in 2022 had more than 10 million euros more than in 2021: European Logistics, from 24.47 to 34.69 million euros, Luscan Com, from 22.18 to 34.07, Avimi Serv, from 16.01 to 32.83, and Alymar Business, from 12.83 million to 27.22 million euros.
In the Top by average turnover for the last five years, Carrion continues to rank first, with 107.23 million euros, despite the continuous decrease from one year to another, as result of the decrease of the number of trucks registered in Romania. It is followed by Vos Logistics Cargo, with 103.38 million euros, which decreased in 2020, but since then has had only increases, and Internațional Alexander, with 94.81 million euros, which has recovered continuously the gap.
The lowest average turnover over the last five years among the Top 30 companies belongs to Transpeco (28.73 million euros), Agexim (28.19), Binar Speed Exclusive (28.19), Rozoti Prodcom (26.42), Speed Line Impex (24.80), Cat-Ion (21.94) and Iliuță Expedition (15.75).
Outside Top 30 there are companies that have an average turnover over the last five years even higher than 30 million euros, so more than the carriers above: Eliton Trans (32.51 million euros), which nevertheless increased from one year to another, Ravitex (33.99) and Dianthus Company (35.75). The latter two had one significant decrease in the last five years: Ravitex from 38.29 million euros in 2019 to 28.80 in 2020 and Dianthus from 40.03 million euros in 2019 to 27.14 million in 2020.
Internațional Alexander and Dolo have the highest profits among the companies with big turnovers
Transpeco Logistics & Distribution, Total N S A and Binar have the highest profit margin among the Top 30 companies: 17%, 12% and 9% respectively. On the other hand, Vos Logistics Cargo, Duvenbeck, Dunca, Gartner, Vos Logistics Bulk and Dumagas have profit margins around 0%.
Besides the Top 30 companies by turnover, we identified some that have a profit margin of over 10%, and the most well-known, which make transport with their own fleet, are Dianthus Company (13%), Romstyl Impex (11%) and Fartud (10%).
Among the companies in Top 30 by turnover, the first two have the highest net profits in 2022: Internațional Alexander (8.34 million euros) and Dolo Trans (7.28), followed by Transpeco (6.13 million euros), Internațional Lazăr Company (5.03), Binar (4.25) and only then the third ranked by turnover, Rin Trans Activ (4.14 million euros). A net profit higher than some companies in Top 30 by turnover also have a couple of companies that are not in this ranking: Dianthus (4.10 million euros), Est Europa Expediții (3.78), Romstyl Impex (3.76), Fartud (3.31 million euros), meaning the companies mentioned above as having high profit margin.
The companies in Top 30 by turnover in 2022 which had losses are Carrion (3.64 million euros), Vos Logistics Cargo (1.80), Gartner (1.74) and Vos Logistics Bulk (€266,195).
Apart from these 47 companies with more than 30 million euros turnover, 31 had over 20 million euros, 97 had over 10 million euros, 180 had over five million euros and 233 transport companies had over one million euros.
Foreign hauliers make low EBITDA compared to turnover, while many domestic operators have better EBITDA
The rankings by EBITDA are led by the same ”performers” who also lead by turnover, but in reverse order: Dolo Trans Olimp is first with €17 million and Internațional Alexander second with €15.45 million. The Argeș-based firm also benefited in 2023 from the high demand for car transport, with rates much higher than in other years after the pandemic when many smaller car-carrier operators disappeared.
In 3rd place is Transpeco Logistics, with quite high EBITDA (€14.5 million) in relation to turnover (€35.36 million), after which it ranks only 29th, similar to Romstyl, 4th by EBITDA (with €10.9 million) and 37th by turnover – €33 million.
The petroleum products distributors are followed by ”veterans” Internațional Lazăr Company and Total N S A (with EBITDA of 10.9 and 9.5 million euros respectively), while in the Top Turnover they rank 17th and 15th respectively, with 41.3 million and 43.16 million euros.
Next come two other companies with high EBITDA to turnover: Royal Trans is in 7th place in terms of EBITDA (€8.2 million), although only 66th by turnover (€24 million), while Dianthus has a smaller gap: 9th by EBITDA (€7 million) and 45th in turnover, with €30.4 million. Between them is Binar Speed Exclusive, with constant positions in the two rankings: 8th by EBITDA – with €7.8 million – and 11th by turnover, with €45.9 million.
After Lagermax Autotransport (€6 million), Logistic E van Wijk (€5.52 million) and Vio Transgrup (€5.3 million), with a constant presence in the two EBITDA vs. turnover rankings, it is also worth mentioning the two companies also involved in intermodal transport, Routier European Transport and Filip, which have higher turnover than EBITDA, but without any major discrepancies: the firm from Cluj has a turnover of €54.4 million and drops 9 places in the EBITDA ranking with €5.35 million, while Filip finished 2022 with €51.5 million turnover and €3.44 million EBITDA.
Companies with lower turnover and higher EBITDA include Laguna Technology (102nd by turnover with €15.5 million), but 21st by EBITDA with €4.5 million, and Express Euroscan (80th by turnover with €20 million and 23rd by EBITDA with €5.3 million). Similarly, Cartrans Preda – ranked 89th by turnover, with €16.8 million – climbs to 46th by EBITDA, with €2.9 million.
Slightly above Laguna Technology is the combined EBITDA of the two Agexim companies: Agexim Transport & Logistics – €2.6 million (€29.6 million) and Agexim Spedition – €2.16 million (€14.53 million turnover).
Among the companies with low EBITDA in relation to turnover are Hoedlmayr-Lazăr Romania (14th place by turnover – 43.55 million euros and 60th place by EBITDA with 2.6 million euros), Dunca Expediții (3.16 million euros vs. 42.64 million euros turnover), Carrion Expedition (55.39 million euros turnover and negative EBITDA) and Vos Logistics Bulk (EBITDA of 350. 000 and turnover 37.52 million euros), while on Vos Logistics Cargo EBITDA is negative, although turnover is one of the highest – 103.53 million euros – with which it ranks 4th.
Moreover, Duvenbeck also had a very good turnover – €85.49 million – with which it ranked 5th in the top 2022, but recorded EBITDA of only €1.1 million with which it does not enter the top 100 by EBITDA.
These results explain why the companies mentioned above, which a few years ago won Tranzit magazine’s efficiency award for foreign-owned companies, were not even among the finalists in this category this year, when we took into account also EBITDA and other criteria among which also the revenue on employee, liquidity ratio etc.
Revenues and expenses per employee outline firms that do predominantly shipping
This year, in our analysis of the most efficient transport companies, we also looked at the operating revenue/employee indicators. This has allowed us to highlight the companies that carry out more freight forwarding or other activities in addition to road haulage: MS Special Projects & Transport, for example, has the highest revenue per employee in 2022 – 934,000 euros – followed in the top of the companies with the highest revenue/employee by La Maritec (657, 000 euro/ employee), Polach Impex (639,000 euro), Royal Trans, (511,000 euro/employee), Excelent Auto (484,000 euro) Vos Logistics Bulk (430,000 euro/employee), Rozoti Prodcom (430,000 euro/employee), Anasped (362,000 euro/employee), Est Europa Expeditions (351,000 euro/employee), Euro Team GB Spedition (308,000 euro/employee). Many companies in the top 10 according to revenue per employee are mostly shipping companies and therefore employ many other companies with many employees. The revenue of these freight forwarders practically also covers the revenue of their subcontractors’ employees, which appears as expenses for these shippers.
Firms that have more trucks, but also do shipping, but whose main activity is transport services, naturally make less revenue per employee. For example, Routier European Transport earns 198,000 euros per employee, Vio Transgrup 176,000, Luscan Com 156,000 and Filip 141,000 euros/employee. And two of these companies, involved in intermodal, basically have higher commission income, with more semitrailers entering the train than drivers needed.
Logistic E van Wijk, Express Euroscan, Lancetti, Blue River București 78 or Atlas Imobiliare, where transport accounts for the main part of revenue, have operating revenues of around €100,000/employee. Between transport and forwarding are Laguna Technology (139,000 euros/employee), Avis Trans (133,000), Ravitex (125,000) and Speed Line Impex (120,000).
Companies that also have a logistics and distribution share, such as Maracana, have a very low revenue per employee compared to the other companies analysed, which is normal considering the large number of employees in logistics and warehousing: €49,000/employee.
In terms of average costs per employee, the shipping companies stand out, with many employees in offices, with higher salaries than drivers, where most of the income comes in the form of per diem/posting allowance. Thus, there are transport firms that do more freight forwarding activities where the cost/employee exceeds €20,000, some even reaching €29,000.
Also, firms that do a lot of domestic transport, in constructions or distribution, where the salary is all on payslips as sallarry, not as daily allowance, and in this case the higher annual costs per employee: on average is €16,000-17,000.
Firms with a majority of staff made up of drivers who work internationally and are also compensated with daily allowances have average staff sallaries between €7,000 and €10,000/year.
Two companies had a profit of more than 10 million euros
In 2022, 561 transport companies in Romania were profitable, compared to 582 in 2021. Two had over 10 million euros (given that in 2021 the highest profit of a carrier was 6.67 million euros), seven others had over five million euros, four had over four million euros, six had over three million euros, 14 had over two million euros, 56 over one million euros, 109 had over €500,000, 220 companies had profits of over €100,000 and the rest, below this value.
The carriers that had the 100 largest profits had in total 220.65 million euros, compared to 123.53 the same firms in 2021 or 150.14 million euros, which had the 100 most profitable firms in the 2021 ranking.
The companies with the 30 highest profits in 2022 had a total of 127.10 million euros, compared to 65.08 million euros the same companies in 2021 and to 78.18, which had the 30 most profitable firms in the 2021 ranking.
Two companies had a profit of over 10 million euros: Port Trans, which in 2021 was third in the ranking by profit and increased by 5.68 million euros, and Someșul Cald Producție, which in 2021 had €795,467, and in 2022 reached 10.09 million euros, and which also had the highest growth in Top.
Port Trans figures, however, do not count in the ranking of carriers, although it has the CAEN code 4941, because the company based in Dâmbovița operates in transports only to transport its mineral aggregates, so, in fact, the sales of construction materials give that spectacular turnover, that would make any carrier envious.
In third place is Internațional Alexander, which in 2021 was on the 17th place and has since increased by 6.23 million euros (the second largest increase after Someșul Cald), on the fourth place is Dolo Trans Olimp, which in 2021 was not in Top 20 by this indicator, but has climbed a lot thanks to an increase of 5.75 million euros (the third largest) and fifth is Transpeco, leader for several years in the ranking by profit, which drops from second place and has an increase of €616,692 compared to 2021, but remains in first place in the ranking by average profit over the last five years, with 6.29 million euros. The company had a bigger turnover in 2022 compared to 2021, primarily because of the increase in tariffs proportional to transport costs – that volumes were the same as in 2021 – because of signing an ADR contract with a new customer, which required new investments for fleet expansion, but also because of the very good spot ADR contracts with Ukrainian companies and because of the sale of end-of-life vehicles at very good prices. The profit also increased due to the increase in volumes, but also to subcontracting some activities with lower margins and services of the same quality. In 2023, the turnover was supposed to be slightly higher than in 2022, especially because of the increase in tariffs – the inflation is still at very high levels and is difficult to cover. For the same reasons, the profit was expected to be similar to 2022, diminished by the seasonal nature of the demand in the ADR transport market, which causes losses in January and February, when the volumes drop significantly, by at least 30%.
Transpeco has 325 assemblies and the current conditions of the economic environment (especially the higher cost of financing and risks) determine caution regarding the development in the near future.
Royal Trans is the first company in this leading group to register a profit decrease compared to 2021, 1.36 million euros, and drops from the first to the 6th place. Total N S A increases by 2.92 million euros and climbs from 14th to seventh place, while Heisterkamp Transport grows from just €98,791 to 5.12 million, and Internațional Lazăr Company has 2.72 million euros more than in 2021 and climbs from 13th to 9th place.
Of the four companies with over four million euros profit in 2022, which occupy the ranks 10-13 in 2022, three were also in Top 20 in 2021: Proiect Personal Leasing was ranked 9th and now has an increase of 1.67 million euros, Rin Trans Activ was on 10th place and increased by 1.34 million euros, and Dianthus was on 4th place and had the lowest increase of the four, €399,700. Binar Speed Exclusive was close to the Top 20 in 2021, with a profit of 1.50 million euros, and in 2022 it increased by 2.74 million euros.
Of the six companies with a profit of over three million euros, Lagermax Autotransport had a loss in 2019 (of the companies that had a loss in 2021, this is the one that had the highest profit in 2022) and Est Europa Expediții (with 1.89 million euros in 2021 and an increase of 1.88 million euros in 2022) and Agexim (1.55 million euros in 2021 and an increase of 1.46 million euros in 2022) were not in Top 20 by profit. The other three, Romstyl, Fartud and Express Euroscan, were in 5th, 8th and 6th places respectively in 2021, and had increases of €781,518, €439,746 and €121,340 respectively in 2022.
Among the firms with profits of more than two million euros the ones that were in 2021 in Top 20 are Rozoti Prodcom (15th in 2021 and with an increase of 709,300 million euros in 2022), Logistic E Van Wijk (20th in 2021 and with an increase of €841,768), Lancetti Transport (19th in 2021 and with an increase of €314,337). Out of the group of 14 companies with profits of over two million euros, none had losses in 2021. The largest profit increases compared to the previous year belong to Saan Trucking (€1.85 million), Marymantes Speed (€1.76 million) and Filip (€1.51 million). Saan Trucking is a company based in Cluj-Napoca, separated in 2012 from Royal Dutch Saan, a Dutch family company, specialized in events and shows logistics, that had a bigger profit in 2022 at the end of the quarantine period of the pandemic.
The highest profit margins among the Top 30 carriers by profit belong to Someșul Cald Producție (46%), Heisterkamp Transport (36%), Port Trans (35%) and MMM Trans Company (34%), far from the others. The lowest profit margins belong to Internațional Alexander and Dolo Trans (6%), Filip (5%) and Rin Trans Activ (4%).
Al the firms in Top 30 by profit have made a profit in each of the last five years, except Lagermax, which had a loss in 2020 and 2021, and Heisterkamp and Saan Trucking, which had a loss in 2020.
The highest average profits over the last five years after Transpeco belong to Internațional Alexander (4.78 million euros), Someșul Cald Producție (4.35 million euros) and Port Trans (4.28 million euros), and three of the companies have an average of less than one million euros (Lagermax €995,293, Saan Trucking €925,382 and Romoldova – a forwarder from Suceava that offers transport services to Russia, Ukraine, Belarus, Turkey etc. and their connection with the EU – €835,298). Outside the Top 30 by profit in 2022 there are 17 companies with an average profit of over one million euros, and Vio Transgrup, which in 2022 is 35th in this ranking with 1.98 million euros, even has an average of 2.08 million euros of profit over the last five years.
The highest turnover among the Top 30 carriers by profit belong to Internațional Alexander (128.88 million euros), Dolo Trans Olimp (117.85) and Rin Trans Activ (109.71), and the lowest belong to MMM Trans Company (6.89 million euros), Saan Trucking (8.51) and Titanic Group (12.59). Among the companies outside the Top 30 by profit that have high turnovers there are J.T. Grup Oil (61.16 million euros), Routier (54.46), H.Essers (44.15), Hoedlmayr-Lazar (43.55) etc.
The largest assets among the carriers in Top 30 by profit are the ones of Internațional Alexander (79.67 million euros), Internațional Lazăr Company (61.46) and Dolo Trans Olimp (58.61). The smallest assets are the ones of Saan Truking (3.15 million euros), MMM Trans Company (5.02) and Heisterkamp (5.09).
